The night before Esther's big moment, King Xerxes can't sleep. He's tossing, turning, staring at the ceiling. So he does what any king would do — he calls for the royal records to be read to him. Basically, ancient bedtime stories. And buried in those scrolls is a forgotten entry: Mordecai once uncovered an assassination plot against the king and SAVED HIS LIFE. But nobody ever rewarded him.
The king asks, "What honor was given to Mordecai for this?"

He couldn't sleep and had the royal records read to him. The king couldn't sleep, so he had the royal chronicles read aloud. In those records, he discovered that Mordecai had once saved his life by uncovering an assassination plot — and was never rewarded.
What did Haman think when the king asked, "What should be done for a man the king wants to honor?"
He thought the king was talking about himself (Haman). Haman's ego was so enormous that he was convinced the king must be talking about honoring him. So he described the most extravagant honor he could imagine — and it all went to Mordecai instead.
What did Esther reveal at her banquet?
That she was Jewish and that Haman was plotting to destroy her people. Esther courageously revealed her Jewish identity and exposed Haman's genocidal plot right there at the dinner table, with the king and Haman both present.
What happened to Haman in the end?
He was hanged on the very gallows he had built for Mordecai. In one of the greatest reversals in the Bible, Haman was executed on the exact seventy-five-foot gallows he had built to kill Mordecai. The trap caught the trapper.
How were the Jewish people ultimately saved?
A new decree allowed them to defend themselves. Since the original decree couldn't be reversed under Persian law, a new decree was issued giving the Jewish people the right to defend themselves. And they were saved.
