Okay, I need you to stop whatever else you're thinking about because today's story has a TALKING DONKEY. Yes, you heard that right. A donkey that opens its mouth and has an actual conversation. This really happened. Let's get into it.
So Israel is moving through the wilderness, and they're getting close to the land of Moab. The king of Moab — a guy named Balak — is absolutely terrified. He's seen what God has done for Israel, and he's thinking, "There is NO way I can fight these people." So he comes up with what he thinks is a genius plan.
He sends messengers to a prophet named Balaam and says, "Come curse these Israelites for me. I'll pay you a ton of money." Balaam asks God about it, and God says, "No. You will not curse them, because they are blessed." Pretty clear, right?
But Balak keeps pushing, keeps offering more money, and eventually Balaam gets on his donkey and heads toward Moab. Here's where it gets absolutely wild.
An angel of the Lord — with a drawn sword — stands in the middle of the road to block Balaam. But Balaam can't see the angel. You know who CAN see the angel? The donkey.
The donkey swerves off the road into a field. Balaam beats her. They go into a narrow path between two walls. The donkey sees the angel again and presses against the wall, crushing Balaam's foot. Balaam beats her again. Then the donkey just lies down in the middle of the road and refuses to move. Balaam is furious and beats her a third time.
And then — GOD OPENS THE DONKEY'S MOUTH.
The donkey says, "What have I done to you that you've beaten me three times?!" Balaam is so angry he actually argues back: "You made me look like a fool! If I had a sword, I'd kill you!" He's having a full argument with his donkey and doesn't even realize how ridiculous that is.
Then God opens Balaam's eyes, and he finally sees the angel standing there with a sword. The angel says, "Your donkey saw me and saved your life three times. If she hadn't turned away, I would have killed you."
Balaam falls flat on his face.
And the best part? When Balaam finally gets to Balak, he can't curse Israel. Every time he opens his mouth, blessings come out instead. Three times Balak sets up altars and says "Curse them!" and three times Balaam blesses Israel. Balak is FURIOUS.
Here's what I want you to see. Nobody can curse what God has blessed. No person, no enemy, no force on this earth can undo what I have spoken over your life.
