I was swallowed by a great fish and lived inside it for three days and three nights. Who am I?
Answer: Jonah (Jonah 1:17). God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, but Jonah ran the other way and ended up in the belly of a huge fish. After three days, the fish spit him out on dry land, and Jonah finally obeyed.

I killed a giant with just a stone and a sling. I later became the most famous king in the Bible. Who am I?
Answer: David (1 Samuel 17). As a young shepherd boy, David defeated the Philistine giant Goliath with a single stone. He went on to become Israel's greatest king and wrote many of the Psalms.

I built a boat big enough for my family and two of every animal, even though it had never rained before. Who am I?
Answer: Noah (Genesis 6-9). God warned Noah about a coming flood and told him to build an ark. Noah obeyed, and his family and the animals were saved when the waters covered the earth.

I was sold by my brothers, thrown in a pit, sent to prison, and ended up ruling an entire country. Who am I?
Answer: Joseph (Genesis 37-50). Joseph's jealous brothers sold him into slavery, but God was with him through every hardship. He eventually became the second most powerful man in Egypt.

I am a wall that fell down when people marched around me and blew trumpets. What am I?
Answer: The walls of Jericho (Joshua 6). God told Joshua to have the Israelites march around the city once a day for six days, then seven times on the seventh day. When they blew their trumpets and shouted, the walls collapsed.

I was so strong I could tear a lion apart with my bare hands, but a haircut took away my power. Who am I?
Answer: Samson (Judges 13-16). Samson's incredible strength came from God and was connected to his uncut hair. When Delilah tricked him into revealing his secret, his hair was cut and his strength left him.

I am a bush that burned with fire but was never destroyed. What am I?
Answer: The burning bush (Exodus 3). God spoke to Moses from a bush that was on fire but did not burn up. Through this miracle, God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

I am a tiny boy who heard God call my name in the middle of the night. At first I thought it was my teacher, Eli. Who am I?
Answer: Samuel (1 Samuel 3). Young Samuel was sleeping in the temple when God called his name. He ran to Eli three times before the old priest realized it was God speaking. Samuel became one of Israel's greatest prophets.

I was a queen who risked her life to save her people from an evil plan. My story never mentions God by name, but He is all over it. Who am I?
Answer: Esther (Esther 4-7). Queen Esther approached the king without being summoned, which could have meant death, to expose Haman's plot to destroy the Jewish people. Her courage saved an entire nation.

I am a sea that split in half so people could walk through on dry ground. What am I?
Answer: The Red Sea (Exodus 14). God parted the Red Sea through Moses so the Israelites could escape from the Egyptian army. When the Egyptians tried to follow, the waters crashed back together.

I walked on water but started to sink when I got scared. Jesus had to catch me. Who am I?
Answer: Peter (Matthew 14:28-31). When Peter saw Jesus walking on the water during a storm, he asked to come out and join Him. Peter walked on the water toward Jesus, but when he looked at the waves, fear took over and he began to sink. Jesus immediately reached out His hand.

I was a tax collector sitting in a tree because I was too short to see over the crowd. Jesus called me by name and came to my house for dinner. Who am I?
Answer: Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10). Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus passing through Jericho. Jesus looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." Zacchaeus was so changed by the encounter that he gave half his possessions to the poor.

I am food that fell from the sky every morning to feed hungry travelers in the desert. What am I?
Answer: Manna (Exodus 16). When the Israelites were hungry in the wilderness, God sent manna (a flaky, bread-like substance) from heaven every morning. They could gather only enough for each day, trusting God to provide again tomorrow.

We are a pair of brothers. One was hairy, and the other was smooth-skinned. Our father could not tell us apart when he was old and blind. Who are we?
Answer: Esau and Jacob (Genesis 27). When Isaac was old and blind, Jacob put goatskins on his arms to feel hairy like Esau and tricked his father into giving him the firstborn blessing.

I am a coat of many colors that made my brothers so jealous they could not stand me. What am I?

Answer: The lion's den (Daniel 6). Daniel was thrown into a den of lions for praying to God instead of the king. God sent an angel to shut the lions' mouths, and Daniel came out without a scratch.

We were three friends who were thrown into a fiery furnace so hot it killed the guards who threw us in, but we walked out without even smelling like smoke. Who are we?
Answer: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3). These three young men refused to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar's golden statue. They were thrown into a blazing furnace, but God protected them. The king even saw a fourth figure walking with them in the fire.

I am a donkey who talked to my owner because he could not see the angel of the Lord standing in the road. What Bible story am I from?
Answer: Balaam's donkey (Numbers 22:21-34). The prophet Balaam was riding his donkey when the animal saw an angel with a drawn sword blocking the path. When Balaam beat the donkey for stopping, God opened the donkey's mouth and it spoke to Balaam.

I am a boy who gave Jesus five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus used my lunch to feed over 5,000 people. Who am I?
Answer: The boy with the loaves and fish (John 6:1-14). His name is not recorded in the Bible, but his small offering became one of Jesus' greatest miracles. Jesus took the boy's lunch, gave thanks, and multiplied it to feed a massive crowd with twelve baskets of leftovers.
Riddle #20
I am a star that appeared in the sky to announce the birth of a king. Wise men followed me from the east all the way to Bethlehem. What am I?
Answer: The Star of Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1-12). When Jesus was born, a special star appeared in the sky. Wise men (also called Magi) saw it and traveled a great distance to find the newborn king. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
How to Use These Riddles
Car rides. Read one riddle at a time and let the family compete. Award points for correct answers and bonus points if they can name the Bible book where the story is found.
Sunday school. Print the riddles on cards and use them as an icebreaker or review activity. Split kids into teams for extra competition.
Dinner table. Share one riddle per meal for 20 days. Over three weeks, your family will have reviewed 20 major Bible stories without anyone feeling like they are studying.
