Of all My disciples, John was the one who understood this best. He was the youngest. He was the one who leaned against Me at the Last Supper. He called himself "the disciple whom Jesus loved." And when he was old — the last apostle still alive — he sat down and wrote about the one thing that mattered most.
Love.
"This is how we know what love is," John wrote. "Jesus Christ laid down His life for us."
That's the definition. Not flowers. Not feelings. Not a heart emoji. Love is sacrifice. Love is laying down your life for someone else. That's what I did on the cross — and that's the standard.
Then John took it further: "And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." If you see someone in need and you have the ability to help but you close your heart to them — how can the love of God be in you?
"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
There it is. Love isn't something you just say. It's something you do. It's making room at your lunch table. It's defending the kid no one sticks up for. It's forgiving your friend even when they don't deserve it. It's choosing someone else over yourself.
And then John wrote the simplest, most powerful sentence in the entire Bible: "God is love."
Not God has love. Not God shows love sometimes. God IS love. It's not one of His qualities — it's His identity. Everything He does flows from love. Creation was love. The cross was love. The resurrection was love. Every breath you take is held together by love.
And because God is love, love drives out everything that stands against it. John wrote, "There is no fear in love. Perfect love drives out fear." Are you afraid? Afraid of not being enough, not fitting in, not being loved back? Perfect love — My love — pushes that fear out the door.
"We love because He first loved us." That's the order. You don't love to earn God's attention. You love because He already gave you His.
John understood something at the end of his life that I want you to understand right now: love isn't complicated. It's costly, yes. It's sacrificial, yes. But it's not confusing. Love is how people know you belong to Me. It's the mark. It's the proof.
Love one another. That's the whole thing.
