What Is the Story of The Good Samaritan for Kids?

THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS — Episode 4 "The Good Samaritan" Based on Luke 10:25-37

A religious expert walked up to me one day trying to test me. He said, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" I turned it back on him: "What does the law say?" He answered perfectly: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind — and love your neighbor as yourself." I said, "You nailed it. Do that and you'll live."

But he wasn't satisfied. He wanted to justify himself. So he asked the question that changed everything: "And who is my neighbor?"

He wanted me to draw a line. He wanted me to say: your neighbor is the person who looks like you, talks like you, lives near you. Instead, I told him a story.

This story comes from Matthew/Luke and is part of the New Testament.

Quiz: Test What Your Child Learned

After watching the video, see if your child can answer these questions:

Why did the religious expert ask Jesus "Who is my neighbor?"

The expert wanted Jesus to limit the definition of "neighbor" so he wouldn't have to love everyone. He wanted an excuse. Instead, Jesus blew the walls wide open with a story.

Who were the first two people to walk past the beaten man?

Both were religious leaders — people you'd EXPECT to help. But they both saw the man and walked right past. Their religion didn't translate into action.

Why was it shocking that the Samaritan helped the Jewish man?

Jews and Samaritans despised each other. For a Samaritan to stop, kneel down, bandage wounds, and pay for a Jewish man's care — that was radical, shocking, boundary-breaking love.

What did the Samaritan do AFTER bandaging the man's wounds?

The Samaritan didn't do the bare minimum. He went ALL in — transported the man, nursed him overnight, paid the innkeeper, and promised to cover any extra costs. That's complete, generous love.

What did Jesus say after telling the story?

Three simple words with massive implications. Don't just hear this story — LIVE it. Be the one who stops. Be the one who crosses lines to show love. Go and do likewise.
