Hey — welcome back. Last episode, Solomon drifted from God. God said the kingdom would be torn apart. Well, today? It happens.
Solomon dies. His son Rehoboam takes the throne. But the people have a request. Solomon's massive building projects came at a cost — heavy taxes, forced labor. They were exhausted.
They say: "Your father put a heavy yoke on us. Lighten the load, and we'll serve you faithfully." Fair, right?
Rehoboam asks his father's old advisors — experienced men who served Solomon for decades. Their advice: "Be a servant to these people. Give them a kind answer, and they will serve you forever." Lead with humility. Win their hearts.
But then Rehoboam asks his young buddies. Their advice? "Tell them THIS: 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist! My father disciplined you with whips? I'll discipline you with SCORPIONS!'"
Yeah. Real helpful, guys.
And here's the tragic part — Rehoboam listened to his friends. He rejected the elders' wisdom and chose his peers' arrogance. He stood before the nation and delivered that scorpion speech word for word.
The reaction was instant. Ten tribes said, "We're done. We have no share in David's house!" They made a man named Jeroboam their king. The united kingdom — built by Saul, David, and Solomon — was ripped in two.
The Northern Kingdom — ten tribes — became Israel under Jeroboam. The Southern Kingdom — Judah and Benjamin — stayed with Rehoboam. Split. And it would NEVER be united again.
All because a young king listened to the wrong voices.
WHO you listen to shapes your future. Rehoboam had wise counsel right in front of him. But he chose friends who told him what he WANTED to hear, not what he NEEDED to hear.
That's a warning for all of us. Surround yourself with people who tell you the truth, even when it's hard. Choose advisors who are wise, not just popular. One bad decision fueled by wrong voices can change everything.
