EXILE & FAITH — EPISODE 5: THE WRITING ON THE WALL

Alright — this story is intense. It's got a wild party, stolen sacred objects, a floating hand, mysterious writing, and a kingdom that falls in a single night. Ready?
Years have passed. Nebuchadnezzar is gone. His grandson Belshazzar is now king of Babylon. And Belshazzar? He hasn't learned a THING from his grandfather's story.
One night, Belshazzar throws an enormous party. A thousand of his nobles are there — drinking, feasting, celebrating. And then Belshazzar does something absolutely reckless. He orders his servants to bring out the gold and silver cups that were stolen from God's Temple in Jerusalem. The SACRED vessels — the ones set apart for worshiping the one true God.
And he uses them to drink wine and toast the gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. He takes what belongs to God and uses it to celebrate everything that ISN'T God.
That's when it happens.
Out of NOWHERE — a human hand appears. No arm. No body. Just fingers, writing on the plaster wall of the palace, right next to the lampstand where everyone can see it. Four words glow on the wall:
MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
The king's face goes white. His knees knock together. The Bible literally says his legs gave way. The whole party goes dead silent.
He calls in every wise man in Babylon. Nobody can read it. Nobody can interpret it. The queen mother remembers Daniel — now an old man — and tells Belshazzar to send for him.
Daniel walks in. He looks at the king and doesn't hold back. "You knew everything that happened to your grandfather. You saw how God humbled him. And you STILL lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You took His sacred cups and used them to praise fake gods. So God sent this message."
Then he reads the writing:
MENE — God has numbered your kingdom and brought it to an end.
TEKEL — You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
UPHARSIN — Your kingdom is divided and given to the Persians.
That very night — THAT SAME NIGHT — the Persian army breaks through Babylon's defenses. Belshazzar is killed. The mighty Babylonian Empire falls in a single evening.
Here's the lesson: there is a point where arrogance meets accountability. You can ignore God for a while. You can misuse what's sacred. But eventually, the hand writes on the wall. How you treat what's holy — what God has given you — matters more than you think.
Respect what's sacred. Because God is always watching — and He always keeps score.
