I want to talk to you about something almost every person deals with — worry. That tight feeling in your chest. The thoughts racing through your mind at night. "What if I fail? What if they don't like me? What if something bad happens?"
I've watched worry steal more peace from my children than almost anything else. That's why I spoke about it directly when I was teaching on a hillside in Galilee.
I said, "Do not worry about your life — what you will eat or drink or wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?"
Then I pointed to the sky. "Look at the birds. They don't plant seeds. They don't harvest crops. They don't store food in barns. And yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they are?"
If God makes sure every sparrow has its breakfast, how much more will He take care of you — His own child?
Then I pointed to the fields. "See the wildflowers? They don't work or spin thread. Yet not even King Solomon in all his royal robes was dressed as beautifully as one of these." If God dresses the grass with that much beauty, won't He take care of what you need?
Then I asked the question that puts worry in its place: "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?"
The answer is no one. Worry doesn't fix anything. It doesn't solve problems or protect you from the future. All it does is steal your peace today.
So what should you do instead? I told them: "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Put me first. Trust me first. And I'll handle the rest.
Years later, Paul wrote to the Philippians and gave them the same truth wrapped in a promise: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
When you bring your worries to God instead of carrying them yourself, He gives you peace. A peace so deep it doesn't even make logical sense. It guards your heart like a shield.
So here's the trade I'm offering you. Give me your worry. I'll give you my peace. That's not a bad deal, is it?
