THE RISE OF KINGS — Episode 4: God Chooses David
Based on 1 Samuel 16 | Narrated by Jesus
This is one of my FAVORITE stories to tell. Because in this episode, God flips the script on what everyone thinks a king should look like. Get ready — this one's going to change how you see yourself.
After rejecting Saul, God told Samuel, "I'm sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem. I've chosen one of his sons to be the next king." Samuel was nervous — if Saul found out, he'd kill him! But God gave him a cover: "Take a sacrifice with you. I'll show you what to do."
So Samuel arrived, and Jesse lined up his sons. First came Eliab — tall, strong, warrior material. Samuel took one look and thought, "THIS is definitely the one."
But God stopped him cold: "Don't look at his appearance or how tall he is. I've rejected him. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the HEART."
Boom. Write that down. Tattoo it on your brain. That verse changes EVERYTHING.
Next came Abinadab. Nope. Then Shammah. Nope. Then four more sons — one after another. God said no to ALL seven. Samuel turned to Jesse, confused. "Are these ALL your sons?"
Jesse kind of shrugged. "Well... there's the youngest. He's out in the fields watching the sheep." Almost like an afterthought! Like, "Oh yeah, I guess there's David, but he's just a kid — surely you don't mean HIM."
Samuel said, "Send for him. We're not sitting down until he gets here."
They brought David in — young, ruddy-faced, bright eyes, fresh from the fields. He probably smelled like sheep. And God said to Samuel, "ARISE. Anoint him. THIS is the one."
Samuel poured oil on David's head right there in front of his brothers — the brothers who overlooked him, the family that forgot to mention him. And from that day on, the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.
Nobody saw it coming. Not his dad. Not his brothers. Not even Samuel at first. But God saw something in that shepherd boy that no one else could see — a heart that was fully, completely, passionately devoted to Him.
And here's what I want YOU to hear today: God doesn't see you the way the world sees you. People might overlook you. They might underestimate you. They might not even think to call your name. But God sees your HEART. And if your heart is turned toward Him? Watch out — because He's got plans for you that will blow everyone's mind.
You are not an afterthought. You are chosen.
