KING DAVID'S REIGN — EPISODE 7: ABSALOM'S REBELLION Scripture: 2 Samuel 15-18 Narrated by Jesus

Friends, today's story is one of the hardest in David's entire life. It's not about an enemy army or a giant. It's about something far more painful — betrayal from his own son.

David had a son named Absalom. And Absalom was impressive — handsome, charming, and magnetic. People were drawn to him. But deep inside, Absalom was angry. He felt overlooked. He wanted power. And instead of talking to his father, he started scheming.

Here's what Absalom did. He would stand at the city gate where people came to bring their problems to the king. And he'd say, "Oh, your case is so important, but there's nobody from the king to listen to you. If only I were judge — I'd give you justice!" One by one, he stole the hearts of the people. He made them love him and doubt David. It was smooth, calculated, and devastating.

Then came the bombshell. Absalom declared himself king in Hebron. Messengers rushed to David with the news: "The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom." And David — the mighty warrior, the giant-slayer, the king — had to run. He fled Jerusalem on foot, barefoot, weeping as he climbed the Mount of Olives. His own city. His own throne. Taken by his own son.

Civil war erupted across Israel. David's loyal soldiers fought against Absalom's forces. David gave one specific order to his commanders: "Be gentle with the young man Absalom — for my sake." Even now, even after everything, David loved his boy.

The battle raged in the forest of Ephraim. And then it happened. Absalom was riding his mule when his long, thick hair got caught in the branches of a great oak tree. He was left hanging there, helpless. And against David's wishes, Joab — David's commander — struck Absalom down.

When the news reached David, he didn't celebrate the victory. He collapsed. He went to his room and wept, crying out, "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you — O Absalom, my son, my son!"

That cry still echoes through history. It's the sound of a father's broken heart.

Here's the lesson, and it's an important one. Family pain is the deepest kind of pain there is. Loving someone doesn't guarantee they won't hurt you. But David never stopped loving Absalom — not even at the end. And that, friends, is what real love looks like. It doesn't give up, even when it's breaking.

Hold your family close. And when it hurts — and sometimes it will — remember that love is always worth it.
