Deborah a Brave Leader

Read the lesson transcript

Hey, welcome back! Today I've got a story that is going to blow your mind, because it's got not one but TWO incredible women at the center of it. In a time when most leaders were men, God handpicked a woman to lead an entire nation. Let's talk about Deborah.

So Israel has done it again — fallen into the cycle. They turned away from God, and this time a brutal Canaanite king named Jabin is crushing them. His military commander, Sisera, has nine hundred iron chariots. Nine hundred! These are basically the tanks of the ancient world. Israel has been suffering under this guy for twenty years.

But God has a plan, and her name is Deborah.

Deborah is a prophet AND a judge — she's hearing directly from God AND leading the nation. People come from all over to sit under the palm tree where she holds court, seeking her wisdom. She is fierce, she is faithful, and she is fearless.

One day, Deborah summons a warrior named Barak and tells him, "God is commanding you to gather ten thousand men and march against Sisera's army. God will hand him over to you."

Now here's where it gets interesting. Barak looks at Deborah and says, "I'll go — but ONLY if you come with me."

Deborah doesn't flinch. She says, "I'll go with you. But because of this, the honor of defeating Sisera won't go to you — it'll go to a woman."

Barak probably thinks she means herself. He's wrong.

They march into battle. God throws Sisera's entire army into confusion. Chariots are useless. Soldiers are panicking. It's a total rout. Sisera, the fearsome commander, abandons his own chariot and runs for his life on foot.

He stumbles to the tent of a woman named Jael, thinking he's found a safe hiding place. Jael welcomes him in, gives him something to drink, covers him with a blanket. And when he falls asleep? She takes a tent peg and ends the threat of Sisera once and for all. One woman. One tent peg. Battle over.

Deborah and Barak sing a victory song that echoes through history. The land has peace for forty years.

Here's what I want you to understand. God doesn't have a checklist of who He can and can't use. Male, female, old, young, popular, unknown — it doesn't matter. What matters is a willing heart and a faith that says "yes" when God calls.

Maybe the world has told you that you're too young, too quiet, too different. I'm telling you right now — I see you, and I can use you in ways that will shock everyone. Including yourself.

Are you willing?

Quiz: Test What Your Child Learned

After watching the video, see if your child can answer these questions:

What two roles did Deborah hold in Israel?

Deborah was both a prophet — hearing directly from God — and a judge, meaning she was the leader of Israel. People came from across the nation to seek her guidance and wisdom under the palm tree where she held court.

What condition did Barak give before agreeing to go into battle?

When Deborah told Barak that God commanded him to lead the army against Sisera, Barak said he would only go if Deborah went with him. She agreed, but told him the glory for defeating Sisera would go to a woman instead of to him.

How was the enemy commander Sisera ultimately defeated?

After fleeing the lost battle on foot, Sisera hid in Jael's tent, thinking he was safe. Jael gave him shelter and a drink, but when he fell asleep, she used a tent peg to end the threat of Sisera permanently — fulfilling Deborah's prophecy that the glory would go to a woman.
