Remember Hannah's miracle baby? Samuel grew up in the temple, serving under the old priest Eli. He swept floors, trimmed lamps, helped with the daily work. Just a young boy in the house of God. And here's what the Bible tells us about that time: "The word of the Lord was rare in those days." God had gone quiet. Heaven seemed silent.
But God was about to break that silence — and He chose to do it through a kid.
One night, Samuel was lying down in the temple, near the ark of God. Everything was dark and still. And then — a voice. Clear as day.
"Samuel!"
Samuel jumped up and ran to Eli. "Here I am! You called me."
Eli looked at him, confused. "I didn't call you. Go back to sleep."
So Samuel went back and lay down. And then it happened again.
"Samuel!"
He ran to Eli again. "Here I am — you definitely called me!"
Eli said, "Son, I did not call you. Go lie down."
This happened a THIRD time. "Samuel!" And again he ran to Eli.
Now here's where old Eli finally figured it out. The Bible says Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So he told Samuel, "Go lie down, and if He calls you again, say: 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'"
Samuel went back. He lay down in the darkness. And the voice came one more time.
"Samuel! Samuel!"
And this time, the boy answered: "Speak, for your servant is listening."
That night, God spoke directly to Samuel — a serious message about what was coming for Eli's family, because Eli's sons had been wicked and Eli hadn't stopped them. It was heavy. But Samuel was faithful. He delivered God's message honestly, even though it was hard.
From that night on, Samuel grew into one of the greatest prophets Israel ever had. He would anoint kings. He would guide the nation. He would speak God's words for decades. And it all started with a whisper in the dark to a boy willing to listen.
Here's what I want to leave you with: God speaks to young people. Not just adults. Not just pastors and prophets. He spoke to a boy on a mat in a dark room. And He wants to speak to YOU.
