I want to tell you about one of my disciples — a man named Thomas. And I want to tell you why his doubt led to one of the most powerful declarations of faith ever spoken.
Here is what happened. On the evening of that first Easter Sunday, I appeared to my disciples. They were hiding behind locked doors, terrified that the religious leaders might come after them next. I walked right through those locked doors — because risen bodies can do things like that — and I stood among them. I showed them my hands and my side. I said, "Peace be with you." And they were overjoyed.
But Thomas was not there. He had stepped out. He missed it.
When the others told him, "We have seen the Lord!" Thomas was not having it. He crossed his arms and said, "Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will NOT believe."
Now, some people give Thomas a hard time for this. They call him "Doubting Thomas." But I want you to think about it differently. Thomas was honest. He did not fake faith he did not have. He did not just go along with the crowd. He said what he really felt. And you know what? I can work with honesty.
A full week went by. Seven days of Thomas sitting with his doubt while everyone around him was celebrating. That must have been hard.
Then, the next Sunday, the disciples were together again — and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked again. And once more, I came and stood among them.
I looked straight at Thomas. I said, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."
I met him RIGHT where he was. I did not scold him. I did not reject him. I gave him exactly what he needed.
And Thomas — this man who said he would NOT believe — looked at me and said the most magnificent words: "My Lord and my God!"
Not just "my teacher." Not just "my friend." MY LORD AND MY GOD. That is the greatest declaration of who I am in all four Gospels. And it came from the mouth of the doubter.
Then I said something that reaches across two thousand years and lands right in your lap: "Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have NOT seen and yet have believed."
That is talking about YOU. You have not seen me with your physical eyes — not yet. But if you believe, you are blessed. Your faith is not less because you have not seen. It is MORE.
LESSON: Doubt is not the enemy of faith — it can be the doorway to deeper faith. Bring your honest questions to Jesus. He is not afraid of your doubts.
