This is one of my favorite stories to tell, because I got to do something sneaky — in the best possible way.
It was that same Sunday — resurrection day. Two of my followers were walking from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles away. Their names were Cleopas and a companion, and they were CRUSHED. Devastated. Everything they had hoped for — that I was the Messiah, that I would save Israel — seemed to be over. They had watched me die on a cross. They were walking home with broken hearts.
And then I showed up. I walked right up beside them and started walking along. But here is the amazing part — their eyes were kept from recognizing me. They had no idea who I was.

Their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. The Bible says their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. God had a purpose in this — He wanted them to learn something first.
What did Jesus do as they walked together?
He walked them through the entire Bible showing how everything pointed to Him. Starting with Moses and going through all the Prophets, Jesus showed them how every story, prophecy, and promise in Scripture pointed to Him.
At what moment did the disciples finally recognize Jesus?
When He took bread, blessed it, and broke it. At the dinner table, when Jesus broke the bread, their eyes were opened and they knew exactly who He was.
What did the disciples say after Jesus vanished?
"Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?". They realized that while Jesus was explaining the Scriptures, their hearts were burning with excitement and truth. Then they ran seven miles back to Jerusalem to tell the others!
